Perhaps this should be called, "How does one country steal another country's citizens": Call it wishful thinking or mental illness but Monique Fasel has made very elaborate attempts to erase Celina and Stephanie Yavelow's American citizenship. First the facts: Celina Yavelow and Stephanie Yavelow are native-born American citizens who, prior to their kidnapping by Monique Fasel, had spent more than half their combined lives in the United States. Their native language is English. Their father, Christopher Yavelow is also a native-born American citizen whose native language is English. Monique Fasel is a Swiss citizen born in Switzerland. Her native language is Swiss-German. The children have spent less than two months of their lives in Switzerland and they speak no Swiss-German. The Yavelow family moved directly from Los Angeles to Holland in 1993. Documenting this are medical and school records, moving and transportation receipts, and stamps in the passports of all the family members. This notwithstanding, Monique Fasel went to every official data-bank in Holland and changed the children's records to state that they were Swiss citizens (they are not, although we have been told that they have the option to apply for Swiss citizenship between the ages of 18 and 22) and that they lived in Switzerland prior to coming to the Netherlands.
The official records contained false information after Monique Fasel lied to the Dutch authorities about the citizenship and country of origin of Celina and Stephanie Yavelow (Note: "Uittreksel" = "Certificate of Identity"):

It took Yavelow 5 full days to convince Dutch officials that their computers contained false information about his family. In the end he had to bring in all school records, medical records, moving and transportation receipts, all passports with stamps, as well as home videos of the move to establish the truth. The Dutch authorities finally and reluctantly consented, scratching their heads over how Fasel could have changed the information in the first place.

Later Monique led the Central Authority of the Hague Convention in the Netherlands to believe that Celina and Stephanie were Dutch citizens as this letter from the head of the Central Authority indicates.
